Premarital counseling can take a variety of forms. At Building Intimate Marriages, we believe most couples can forge a great, intimate marriage. Our marriage counselors aim to use our training and experience to assess the strengths and growth areas of your unique relationship.
 
Your marriage counselor will help you identify and sort through some of the common issues that tend to divide marriages. They will then provide you with the skills to make them strong in your relationship. As such, premarital counseling leans more toward psycho-education than deep intensive therapy. This is what research has shown to be most effective in establishing strong marriages.

We pursue our goal by providing a premarital assessment and meeting for 6 hours before your wedding to talk through specific topic areas. Then, we provide a free follow-up session. We like to think of the free follow-up session as an anniversary gift from us to you to be used at the one year mark of your marriage. Or, feel free to use your free follow-up anytime after the wedding if you’d like support sooner! Our team cares about you and your relationship. We’re here for you every step of the way.

Included in the Premarital Counseling Package

Your premarital counseling package includes a free relationship assessment* and six full-length (50-minute) sessions with a marriage counselor. These sessions cover a range of topics research shows to be valuable. Additionally, you receive a free follow-up session after the wedding!
 
At the end of the six sessions, you will also receive a letter verifying you have completed premarital counseling. This can be provided to the county when obtaining your marriage license. In most counties, you will receive a discounted license with your verification letter.
 
BEFORE is sold as a package at our Atlanta, GA area therapy practice. However, please feel free to discuss options for adding to or personalizing your package.
 
*Either a PREPARE assessment or SYMBIS assessment. Your counselor will recommend one, but let us know if you have a preference (or want both). We are trained in administering and interpreting both.

Topics Covered in Premarital Counseling

You are free to work with your counselor to address any topic of specific concern. But the BEFORE premarital counseling package includes the following:

Session 1

Assessing your relationship dynamics (strengths & growth areas), family of origin, and issues unique to your relationship.

Homework: Complete PREPARE or SYMBIS assessment.

Session 2

Interpretation and discussion of the premarital assessment.

Both assessments have a body of research behind them to help couples identify areas to strengthen before the wedding.

Session 3

Communication and conflict resolution skills.

Research shows these two topics to be the most important to cover in premarital programs.

Session 4

Money, parenting, extended family, or other unique conflict areas.

Session 5

Sexual intimacy.

Session 6

Commitment and spiritual intimacy.

Premarital Counseling Works!

Research shows communication, conflict resolution, and commitment are super important. They are the most important topics to address in premarital counseling programs. Additionally, we address financial intimacy and sexual intimacy. These tend to be the biggest areas of conflict in early marriages. Children, extended family (in-laws), and spiritual intimacy are also common areas of conflict. They are also addressed at some level depending upon the individual couple.
