Premarital Package

If you are dating, considering engagement, or recently engaged, then our BEFORE premarital package is for you!

Premarital Counseling

Premarital counseling can take a variety of forms. At Building Intimate Marriages, we believe most couples can forge a great, intimate marriage. Our goal in premarital counseling is to use our training and experience to assess the strengths and growth areas of your unique relationship.

We hope to help you identify and sort through some of the common issues that tend to divide marriages and provide you with the skills to make them strong in your relationship. As such, premarital counseling leans more toward psychoeducation than deep intensive therapy since this is what research has shown to be most effective in establishing strong marriages.

Be for your marriage by seeking guidance before the wedding. Our unique research based premarital program provides insight and tools designed to help you establish a strong foundation.

We pursue our goal by providing a premarital assessment and meeting for 6 hours before your wedding to talk through specific topic areas. We then provide a free follow-up session. We like to think of the free follow-up session as an anniversary gift from us to you to be used at the one year mark of your marriage. Or, feel free to use your free follow-up anytime after the wedding if you’d like support sooner! Building Intimate Marriages cares about you and your relationship — we’re here for you every step of the way.

Included in the package

Your package includes a free relationship assessment*, six full-length (50-minute) sessions with a skilled counselor covering a range of topics research shows to be valuable, and a free follow-up session after the wedding!

At the end of the six sessions, you will also receive a letter verifying you have completed premarital counseling that can be provided to the county when obtaining your marriage license. This allows for a discounted license in most counties.

BEFORE is sold as a package, but feel free to discuss options for adding to or personalizing your package.

*Either a PREPARE assessment or SYMBIS assessment. Your counselor will recommend one but let us know if you have a preference (or want both). We are trained in administering and interpreting both.

Our counselors are trained in using the PREPARE® couples assessment tool. Over the last 30 years, the PREPARE® relationship assessment has empowered and energized more than 3 million couples. It is the #1 premarital inventory and couples assessment tool. The PREPARE assessment will help you explore strengt and growth areas as it assesses these areas of your relationship:

  • 12 Relationship Scales — communication, conflict resolution, roles, sexuality, finances, spiritual beliefs, and more
  • 5 SCOPE Personality Scales
  • 4 Couple and Family Scales — based on Circumplex Model
  • 4 Relationship Dynamic Scales
  • 30 Customized Scales

The SYMBIS Assessment is a new premarital tool that asks questions about 2 dozen different relationship areas and is designed to help couples discuss their relationship in these areas. One of the newest tools in the field, BIM is glad to provide it as an option for couples.

Topics Covered

You are free to work with your counselor to address any topic of specific concern but the BEFORE premarital package includes the following:

Session 1:  Assessing your relationship dynamics (strengths & growth areas), family of origin, and issues unique to your relationship.

Homework: Complete PREPARE or SYMBIS assessment

Session 2:  Interpretation and discussion of the premarital assessment.

Both assessments have a body of research behind them and help couples identify areas to strengthen before the wedding.

Session 3:  Communication and conflict resolution skills.

Research shows these two topics to be the most important topics to cover in premarital programs.

Session 4:  Money, parenting, extended family, or other unique conflict areas.

Session 5:  Sexual intimacy

Session 6: Commitment and spiritual intimacy

Premarital Counseling works!

Research shows communication, conflict resolution, and commitment to be the most important topics to address in premarital programs. We also address financial intimacy and sexual intimacy as they tend to be the biggest areas of conflict in early marriages. Children, extended family (in-laws), and spiritual intimacy are other common areas of conflict so they are addressed at some level depending upon the individual couple.
